The Air Travel Organisers’ License (ATOL) is a government scheme founded more than 40 years ago to protect travellers from the perils of travel agents going bankrupt and leaving their customers stranded abroad.
The 1970s saw an explosion in overseas travel, which at the time was rapidly becoming more affordable for millions in British society. ATOL today is a department of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) whose ATOL scheme is legally imposed as part of any pre-booked overseas holiday package: every serious travel agent pays a small ATOL fee per person booked on holiday abroad, for the consumer’s added peace of mind and of course for the government’s added tax revenue!
With millions of UK families now treating holidays abroad as a standard annual venture – many taking for granted the security of the British travel industry while others fear the fate of being stranded abroad, ATOL’s role in guaranteeing confidence and security in products sold by British travel agents is now more critical than ever before.
It’s easy to contact ATOL by phone or by post. Please find ATOL’s telephone contact details and postal contact details below for your convenience.
