The Department for Work and Pensions

Created in 2001 through a merger of the Department for Social Security (DSS) and the Department for Education and Employment, the DWP is now the largest UK government department.

The DWP, which has an annual budget of £151.6 billion, is the umbrella body for four UK government departments:

  • Jobcentre Plus – This is the government agency that administers Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA) to people who are seeking work, and Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) for people who may be looking for work but have been signed off as unfit for work by their doctor. You can ring Jobcentre Plus to register your new claim for either of these benefits, or renew them.
  • The Pension Service – Calculates and pays Basic State Pension to people of retirement age in the UK. The amount paid – which is rising to £115.20 a week from April 2015 – is calculated according to National Insurance contributions. Pension Credit, which was introduced by the Labour government of 1997-2000, is a top-up pension that is paid to ensure that every qualifying pensioner receives a minimum pension of £115.20, weekly.
  • Disability and Carers Service – This government department calculates and pays a raft of benefits to UK residents and their carers. Examples of these benefits are Disability Living Allowance (DLA), Incapacity Benefit, Carers Allowance, and Attendant Allowance.
  • The Child Maintenance Group – Otherwise known as the Child Support Agency, this department of the DWP is responsible for arranging Child Maintenance payments for children of parents who have separated of divorced. They can help parents negotiate their own settlement, negotiate between disputing parties, or fix an amount that is due for parents who can’t agree on an amount. They are also able to track down a parent who has failed to arrange Child Maintenance,
