Liverpool’s Empire Theatre was first founded in 1866. Situated at the Lime Street junction opposite St. George’s Hall in the centre of Liverpool’s scenic downtown district, the theatre has a capacity of about 2,350, making it a good medium-size venue for bands and solo acts as well as theatrical performers and pantomime acts. In 1962 it hosted The Beatles, Liverpool’s most iconic group, who returned to the Empire and their jubilant local fans triumphant in 1965.
Although the old theatre exists only in photographs, the present Empire is something of a historic treasure having opened over 90 years ago in 1925. Its stately appearance and distinctive importance as an entertainment venue for Liverpool’s citizens and visitors alike led to it being designated Grade II Listed status. Commemorations of Royal events have become more frequent in recent years, as the old theatre gradually comes to symbolise the finery which characterised the prosperous Liverpool’s commercial past.
Today the Empire puts on several seasonal shows, with the roster representing well the various attractions from the worlds of music, theatre and performance art.
